Goa is small enough for a short break but varied enough that where you stay changes the trip. Decide on North or South first; the rest follows. For a ready plan, see the 3-day Goa itinerary.
Conditions change. Road openings, permits, fees and weather vary by season and year. Check the latest official or local information before you travel, especially for high-altitude routes.
North or South Goa?
Old Goa's churches and Panjim's Latin quarter sit in between and work as a day out from either side.
North Goa
Busier beaches, nightlife, markets and cafés. Good if you want activity close at hand.
South Goa
Quieter, wider beaches and a slower pace. Good for rest, families and couples.
When to go
The dry winter months are the most popular and the most expensive. The monsoon brings green landscapes and lower prices, but rough seas and some closures. Shoulder months are a good compromise.
Getting around
- Rent a scooter or car from a licensed rental, and carry your driving licence and rental papers.
- Wear a helmet and avoid driving after drinking — checks are common.
- Distances look short on a map but traffic can be slow in peak season.
