Most Kashmir trips use Srinagar as a base, with day trips or short stays in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg. The right mix depends on the season and how much driving you want each day.
Conditions change. Road openings, permits, fees and weather vary by season and year. Check the latest official or local information before you travel, especially for high-altitude routes.
How to split your days
- Srinagar: at least two days for the lakes, gardens and old city.
- Gulmarg: a day trip or overnight stay; popular for snow in winter.
- Pahalgam: one or two nights for valleys and walks.
- Sonamarg: often a day trip, and on the way if you are continuing to Ladakh.
Seasons
Spring and summer are the busiest for sightseeing. Autumn brings colour and fewer crowds. Winter is for snow — some roads and higher areas may close after heavy snowfall.
Practical tips
- Prepaid mobile connections from outside the region have historically not worked in Jammu and Kashmir. Check with your operator, or carry a postpaid connection.
- Check current travel advisories before and during your trip.
- Keep your plan and emergency contacts saved offline for areas with weak coverage.
