7-day itinerary
7-day Ladakh itinerary: Leh, Nubra Valley and Pangong
Last updated
- Duration
- 7 days
- Starts from
- Leh (fly in)
- Best for
- First-time visitors with a week
This plan suits a first visit when you fly into Leh. It puts acclimatisation first, then heads to Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso before returning to Leh. Driving days are long, so keep the pace gentle and leave room for weather or road delays.
Before you start, read the Ladakh travel guide for permits, altitude and fuel.
Conditions change. Road openings, permits, fees and weather vary by season and year. Check the latest official or local information before you travel, especially for high-altitude routes.
Day-by-day plan
Day 1: Arrive in Leh and rest
- Land in Leh and go straight to your stay.
- Rest for the whole day — no sightseeing, no climbing stairs if you can avoid it.
- Drink water and eat light.
Rest on arrival is not optional at this altitude.
Day 2: Easy day around Leh
- Short, gentle outings around Leh town.
- Arrange permits for Nubra and Pangong if you have not already.
- Fill fuel and withdraw cash for the days ahead.
Day 3: Leh to Nubra Valley
Leh → Nubra Valley via Khardung La
- Start early to cross the pass before the afternoon.
- Do not linger at the top of the pass.
- Spend the evening in Nubra Valley.
Last reliable network for a while — save your plan offline before leaving Leh.
Day 4: Explore Nubra
- Visit villages and sights in the valley at an easy pace.
- Confirm the road status for the next day's route to Pangong.
Day 5: Nubra to Pangong Tso
Nubra → Pangong via the Shyok route (if open)
- A long, remote drive — leave early and carry food and water.
- If the Shyok road is closed, you may need to return via Leh instead.
- Overnight near the lake; nights are very cold.
Day 6: Pangong to Leh
Pangong → Leh via Chang La
- Watch sunrise at the lake, then drive back over the pass.
- Rest in Leh in the evening.
Day 7: Leh and departure
- Keep a buffer for delays, or fly out.
- If you have time, a relaxed morning in Leh.
Make this plan work
- Keep a spare day if you can. Roads in Ladakh close for snow, landslides or repairs with little notice.
- If anyone in your group feels unwell at altitude, do not go higher. Descend and seek help if symptoms worsen.
- Fuel up in Leh before each loop; stations are rare outside town.
- Pack for cold nights even in summer — see the packing checklist.
